Digit is the name given to a symbol used to represent a number.

The ten digits we use most are 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.

A digit’s value depends on its position in a number.

For example, 432 has three digits. The 4 represents how many hundreds there are in the number, the 3 represents how many tens there are in the number, and the 2 represents how many ones there are in the number.

We can add them together like this:

      4 × 100 = 400
         3 × 10 = 30
           2 × 1 = 2
                    = 432
