quartile

When quantitative data are listed in ascending order, it’s possible to divide the data into four equal parts. The name given to each part is quartile.

We can use the numbers 5, 6, 8, 2, 5, 7, 6 as an example.

These numbers in ascending order is:

    2, 5, 5, 6, 6, 7, 8

If we divide the numbers into four equal parts, we get three quartiles.

Therefore, the result is:

    Lower quartile (Q1) = 5
    Middle quartile (Q2) = 6
    Upper quartile (Q3) = 7
