place value

A digit’s value depends on its position in a number.

The table opposite shows place values.

In the number 1482, 1 is in the Thousand position, 4 is in the Hundred position, 8 is in the Ten position and 2 is in the Unit position.

In the number 12.34, 1 is in the Ten position, 2 is in the Unit position, 3 is in the Tenth position and 4 is in the Hundredth position. We can say that the number 3 shows a place value of 0.3.
