gradient

Gradient is a measure of how steep a straight line is. For example, how steep a tangent is to a curve.

For example, if the gradient of a straight line is 4, then for each unit we move to the right along the x-axis, we have to move 4 units up along the y-axis.

The gradient of a straight line can be calculated by dividing the vertical change in y with the horizontal change in x.

In the example shown on the graph, the gradient of the line is 3 ÷ 5 = 0.6.
