evaluate

This is the term used for calculating the value of something.

For example, we can evaluate the cost of one book if 3 books cost £12:

12 ÷ 3 = 4

Therefore, one book costs £4.

We can also evaluate an algebraic expression.

For example, we can evaluate x² – 3 when x = 2, by giving x this value:

   x² – 3
= 2² – 3
= (2 × 2) – 3
= 4 – 3
= 1
