hypothesis (hypotheses)
A hypothesis is a statement proposed on the basis of little or no evidence. This is often the starting point for an enquiry or investigation.
It is usually possible to prove whether a hypothesis is true or not.
For example, a hypothesis that large dogs are better at catching a ball will be proved using hundreds of dogs of different sizes.
Sometimes, a hypothesis is not proven. It is only a good explanation, and that explanation could be incorrect.
