direct proportion

Direct proportion is the relationship between two quantities. As one quantity increases or decreases, the other quantity increases or decreases too.

For example, as the distance a car travels (x) increases, the fuel used by the car increases (y).

We can write this relationship as y ∝ x, which is expressed in words like this:

y is directly proportional to x.
