laws of indices

Powers are sometimes referred to as indices.

Multiplying by indices is simple. The rule is to add the indices.

For example:

       23 × 24
    = (2 × 2 × 2) × (2 × 2 × 2 × 2)
    = 23+4
    = 27

Dividing by indices is also simple. The rule is to subtract the indices.

For example:

        25 ÷ 22
    = (2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2)/(2 × 2 )
    = 25-2
    = 23
