repeated subtraction

This is the process of subtracting the same number or amount over and over.

Repeated subtraction is very similar to division. The divisor is subtracted from the dividend again and again.

Think about the number 35 as the dividend, and the number 5 as the divisor.

By dividing 35 by 5 using the process of repeated subtraction, 5 is subtracted from 35 over and over until there is nothing left.

5 can be subtracted from 35 seven times, therefore 35 ÷ 5 = 7.
