short division

Short division is a concise written method of dividing one number by another number, especially if the divisor is one digit.

Let’s use the division sum opposite as an example.

6 doesn’t divide into 1, therefore we have to look at the next digit. This gives us 13, and 6 divides into 13 twice (2) with remainder 1. Then, we have to look at the remainder 1 with the next digit. This gives 12, and 6 divides into 12 twice (2).

Therefore, 132 ÷ 6 = 22.
