When a number is squared, it is that number which is the square root of the answer.

For example:

    52 = 5 × 5 = 25, therefore the square root of 25 is 5.

The square root can also be a negative number.

For example:

    (–5)2 = –5 × –5 = 25, therefore the square root of 25 is also –5.
