hemisphere (hemispheres)

A hemisphere is a three-dimensional shape which is exactly half a whole sphere. It has no vertices but has one side and two faces – one circular face and one curved face.

Every point on the hemisphere’s curved surface is equidistant from the centre of the sphere. This is the centre of the circular face.

The formula for the volume of a hemisphere is:

    \textmd {Volume} = \dfrac{2}{3} \times \pi \times r^{3}

               \textmd V =\dfrac{2}{3} \pi r^{3}

In this formula r represents the radius of the hemisphere. This is the distance from the centre of the circular face to any point on the hemisphere’s curved surface.

The formula for the surface area of a hemisphere is:

    \textmd {Surface}\ \textmd {Area} = 2 \times \pi \times r^{2}

The equator splits the Earth into two hemispheres – the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere.
