sum

The term ‘sum’ has three meanings:

(1) The result of adding two or more numbers.

For example:

    10 + 7 + 23 + 16 = 56

The sum is 56.

(2) A specific amount of money. For example, “Mr Jones can’t afford to pay such an amount of money”.

(3) An arithmetical problem.

It can include any one of the four rules, or a combination of them.

For example:

    • 21 + 14 + 10 = 45 is an addition sum

    • 24 – 9 = 15 is a subtraction sum

    • 14 × 3 = 42 is a multiplication sum

    • 32 ÷ 4 = 8 is a division sum.
